*A little aside on what was going on with the army and food. About three years after we got out of jump school, the army had a huge financial scandal. It seems the supply sergeants had been pocketing money meant to feed the troops. They had a lot of little tricks, like calling one piece of bread two. If five thousand men eat three times a day, and each man is allowed two pieces of bread per meal, that's thirty thousand slices of bread per day. At two cents per slice, that's six hundred bucks a day. If an army cook can make one slice of bread into two, he's magic, and he can pocket three hundred dollars a day. Of course, similar “savings” were being made on each of the items offered at mealtimes.
